Alphaland opens Balesin’s doors; gathers trusted event suppliers at Tie the Knot Wedding and Debut Fair

Now on its third year and open to soon-to-weds as well as debutantes, Alphaland’s Tie the Knot: Wedding and Debut Fair 2019 will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19 at The City Club, Alphaland Makati Place. The 2-day event will highlight Alphaland’s most sought-after wedding destinations—Balesin Island, including the soon-to-open Balesin Marquee which can accommodate 600 persons, Alphaland Baguio Mountain Lodges, and The City Club in Makati.

Wedding and debut planning can get overwhelming, especially for those who aren’t used to throwing celebrations involving a range of event suppliers—from the venue to styling, planners and coordinators, to photography and videography. With this in mind, Alphaland is offering an all-in package where soon-to-weds and debutantes can get the essentials for their special day, exclusively offered at the fair. “This year, we have partnered with one of Balesin’s most in-demand stylists, Cesar Pascual, owner and stylist of Contemporary Florals. His Napa Valley concept will give The City Club that country yet romantic feel,” says The City Club General Manager Nic Belasco. Cesar Pascual has styled several intimate to grand weddings in the various beach wedding venues in Balesin Island.

Unlike other fairs where attendees tend to feel bombarded by exhibitors, Tie the Knot has curated trusted suppliers in the industry who are offering great deals at the fair. Attendees can meet and discuss their event in detail with each supplier they’re interested in, such as the acclaimed couturier Mary Anne Casanova, the first local designer who brought glow-in-the-dark gowns with fiber optic fabric to the Philippines, along with the country’s other top-of-the-line fashion designers; celebrity favorite Nice Print Photography; Chestknot Studios, Forevermine Wedding Films, and Black Tie Entertainment, trusted suppliers for many events held in Balesin; and Aegle Wellness Center, a health and wellness hub offering bespoke wellness programs and medi-spa services in The City Club and in Balesin.

The icing on the cake: attendees will also get a chance to win a 3-day/2-night stay in Balesin with a free engagement shoot by one of Balesin’s trusted photographers, Anne Naig.

Make Your Vacation Worthwhile with Nimo TV

As a self-proclaimed, young-at-heart #TitaOfManila, I recently just started raising a virtual pet through a Tamagotchi. Unfortunately, I accidentally left it at home one hectic workday and when I returned to check it, my 6-year-old virtual pet (one week in real time), was already gone.

It’s been days and although it was just a toy, I felt a sting of regret. Actually, too much that I cannot start raising a new pet yet. I am a casual gamer by the way and failing to raise a Tamagotchi to adulthood feels the same as being defeated in a game. All your effort down the drain and it really hurts.

To somehow recover from the loss, I engulfed myself on a different game for the time being. MOBA games are another favorite of mine aside from RPG’s and luckily, there are a lot of games to choose from now. Also, as a #titagamer, I enjoy watching online game streams and tutorials whenever a new game or hero (game character) is out. I love watching younger people enjoy the games that I, too love.

Nimo TV, one of the country’s leading video game streaming platform, is an excellent past time for students who love gaming and learn new skills at the same time. What is a Furry?: A Primer for FurryPinas 2019

We’ve gotten used to watching shows using anthromorphic creatures as their main characters to drive their story forward. Movies and shows like My Little Pony, Tom and Jerry, and even Digimon have animal characters that one way or another exemplify our human nature. But did you know that there’s a community of people that are fans of this story telling device?

And they are called furries.

So, what is a Furry then?

Furry is a hobby where the fans have an interest towards animal characters with human characteristics. Such characters can be found in many media such as movies, shows, games, literature, toys, cosplay, art, and many more, for any ages.

Sometimes, “Furry” refers to the person who is a fan of the furry hobby. It can also be used to refer to “animal characters with human characteristics”.

Furry characters can be Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Crash Bandicoot, and many characters from shows such as Zootopia, The Lion King, Secret Life of Pets, How To Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, etc.

Who are into the hobby?

Furries come in all shapes and sizes. And when it comes to who’s into the hobby, the furry community has always been one of the more inclusive communities worldwide. That also is true to the Philippines furry community.

In fact, the PH Furry community has a whole slew of enthusiasts. Ranging from entrepreneurs, to artists, designers, even engineers and academians are active furries. Age wise, the Furry community is open to all ages, but majority of the members are around 18-24 years old.

While there’s a collective global community of Furries, the Philippines’ Furry community sets itself apart.

The local furry community is more open to people knowing that they’re Furries and welcome those who are familiar and not too familiar with the hobby. In fact, local Furries don’t hide what they are in the Philippines and are more than happy to explain their hobby to anyone who is interested or wants to know more about it.

This is also true in how the local community treats its conventions. FurryPinas, the annual premiere furry convention in the country has a more welcoming attitude than most furry conventions elsewhere. The organizers take on a more Eastern and Western attitude in the organization and aims to making the most amount of people happy while sharing the love of furry to furry Hobbyist and non-hobbyist alike.

This difference in stance makes FurryPinas a more observed furry convention within the region.

About FurryPinas 2019

On its 2nd year, FurryPinas 2019 is the largest furry convention in Asia serving as the official annual hub for the furry hobby in the Philippines.

The convention aims to provide attendees a more active participation compared to other cons. Providing a more welcoming avenue for those who want to understand and know more about the hobby while providing a safe and happy space for Furries to just have fun, socialize, and enjoy the hobby as a group.

FurryPinas is set to happen on June 8-9, 2019 at the Bayanihan Center (Near SM Megamall). For more information about FurryPinas 2019 you can head to the FurryPinas 2019 site or fanpage you can also check out the Facebook event page to get updated.

Event Review: Ozine Fest 2019 Day 2

April 7, 2019. SM Megamall.

Adulting and summer heat lead me to attend in my “tao mode” on this year’s Ozine Fest. Casual, no costume or wig. I just wanted to fangirl and bond with my friends.

Arrived around after lunch, I was surprised to see the hallway of the 5th floor teeming with people: cosplayers and congoers alike. I mean, I never thought SM Megamall would allow cosplayers outside the halls anymore at all. Well, as a congoer, I was happy. Being greeted by Nana (Mobile Legends) upon alighting from the escalator, I knew my fangirl heart will be full that day. We (Kenneth and I) decided to check out more of the cosplayers outside first before entering the hall. And boy, was I delighted. Mobile Legends, Boku no Hero Academia… BAKUGOU oh my god. They were everywhere.

Event Review:
Ozine Fest 2019 Day 2

With my fangilring purpose met from the very start, I thought, “This event will be a good one.”

Now for the event proper.

Ticket price, PhP230, is quite high for a one-hall event. Also, there’s not much going on. The place wasn’t that cramped though, unlike Toycon. Consequently so, the variety of shops was small. I wanted to buy All Might shirts but everything was cliche. I think we’ve roamed like 10x to only see the same merch and the same faces, literally bumping to that same Boku no Hero cosplayer who also seemed to be looking for just anything to buy. Almost all shops sell the same things: button pins, shirts, plushies, same old toys…and more button pins.

Food shops at least offered variety. But SM has food court too so… nothing special with that.

It’s not all disappointment though.

The part that I enjoyed the most is the Anime Karaoke Contest and band performances. Surprisingly but also maybe because I wasn’t cosplaying then so I got to use the time I usually allot to taking photos of my cosplay to actually watch the performances. One girl sang PEACE SIGN. And yes, you’re right. I sang my lungs out from mumbled lyrics in the verses to straight Nihongo in the chorus part. I love Boku no Hero Academia so much!! I hope she won! She really did a wonderful performance. I used to watch band performances too especially when my favorite anime songs are being played but this Ozine Fest 2019 was different, I watched a band perform because one of their members was cosplaying Bakugou Katsuki!! The band is AsianChickenFest and aside form drummer Bakugou, everyone performed with great passion too.

Overall, Ozine Fest 2019 is not that bad of an event for me but also something that isn’t that special. One should not regret not attending but going isn’t that regretful either. Plus, if I were cosplaying that day, I would be glad to be allowed to roam around in my cosplay. I hope they improve on the program next time. For the price of 230php, the attendees deserve something more than that.

Gudetama finds near you!

Consciously or not, for once in our lives we’ve had this what we call “spirit animal”. It’s something or someone that almost precisely possesses the characteristics we claim to have may be at the moment or in general.
Compared to other Sanrio characters, gudetama, a personified egg with its plain, lame look and apparently advocating laziness, is far from being instantly adored, moreover be considered as one’s spirit animal. However, lately, its same plain, lame egg-self has become its unique cuteness and its on point hatred to doing anything which a lot can relate to, made gudetama a chosen spirit animal of many. Or should I say, spirit …egg?
Being a low-key collector for years now, I used to consider myself lucky whenever I spot a gudetama item at a thrift shop amidst the Rilakkuma or Hello Kitty invaded shelves. Since its appearance is not that child-friendly really, I can’t blame parents for choosing cuddly bears or cute cats as gifts for their children. While thanking them at the same time since, the lower the demand, the lower its price is too.
But honestly, for a collector like me, I am willing to spend more than I am spending today if it means more choices and more gudetama items will be available. Shopping online is useful but seeing gudetama in abundance on physical stores, has a different pinch in a collector’s heart.
Thankfully, from toy stores, clothing and even food stores, gudetama is slowly making its way to the PH market. Providing more items for its rising fanbase in the Philippines.
Below are a few where I have personally purchased a part of my collection:

Japan Diaries: Kaomoji

Kaomoji comes from two Japanese words kao (顔) which means “face” and moji (文字) which means text as in keyboard characters. Basically, kaomiji is the emoticon we use for texting —only cuter.

I used to wonder how these kaomoji’s are inserted to messages or Facebook status and whatnot, I thought, “Do these people type the characters one by one??” To that, I was really amazed and I also wanted to be able to use some.

In my love for anything Japan, I started studying its language —Nihongo, until I learned a few words relating to feelings and emotions. Along with that, I also learned how to read and write in Japanese which made me realize that through learning the language, you also learn their culture and from there I found out that kaomoji’s aren’t simply characters put together but are actually a cuter representation of an emotion almost as a synonym to it.

To simply put it, nowadays, keyboards have auto-correct and predictive functions, right? In Nihongo, there are three types of writing their words: Katakana, Hiragana, Kanji. Therefore, in a Japanese keyboard, it tends to give suggestions of a word in all those three writing styles whichever is available. And there are times that not only those three but also kaomoji’s are being suggested. It can also suggest simple sentences.

For example, the Japanese word for “cute” is 「かわいい」 or “kawaii” in Roman letters. when I type ”kawaii” using a Japanese keyboard, it gives out the suggestions,

  1. かわいい (Hiragana)
  2. 可愛い (Kanji)
  3. かわいいです (“Kawaii desu.” sentence; translate: It is cute.)
    4.カワ(・∀・)イイ!! (Katakana: カワイイ plus kaomoji)

Below are more of my favorite kaomoji’s. Feel free to use them on your texts messages!

Mobile tip:
For a wider variety of kaomojis, ready-made(copy/paste) Kaomoji apps are available for download as well. You just have to choose which ones suits your preference best. Personally, I have tried a lot of apps but the copy and pasting is too much of a task for me. But the choices you have in apps are way larger and more varied.

Let’s exchange smiles, comment your favorite Kaomoji!
